Disappointed – Gap Cover Refused to Pay for Emergency Room Visit

I have been a loyal member of Total Risk Administrators for several years and have never submitted a claim until recently. Last month, my wife broke her foot, and I took her to the hospital’s emergency room. She was treated there, and the doctors sent her for an MRI and scans – all done in the hospital. Unfortunately, my medical aid did not cover the full cost, so I submitted a claim to my gap cover. To my surprise, I was informed that they will not cover the expenses because it was “not in-hospital.” I find this extremely confusing and disappointing, because the entire incident happened inside the hospital — from the ER treatment to the scans. I have been paying my gap cover premiums for years without claiming, and now that I truly needed help, my claim was rejected on what feels like a technicality. I would like a clear explanation of why an emergency hospital visit is not considered “in-hospital,” and why this is not covered. This experience has left me feeling like I have been paying for nothing (“mahala”).
