ELBA gas heater will not stay lit

I received an ELBA retro gas heater as a gift a while ago, and due to the weather decided to use it today. It doesn't matter how long you hold the knob in, as soon as I release it, the heater switches off. I even held it in for more than a minute and the result was the same
