Vehicle sold with engine that failed within three months – Top Gear RV Centre
In October 2024 I bought a 2015 Range Rover Sport 4.4 SDV8 HSE from Top Gear RV Centre. Approximately three months later, the engine failed. A workshop diagnosis found the piston on cylinder 6 had seized due to lack of lubrication. Before the failure, I had raised a low coolant warning with the salesperson (in writing) and received no caution in response. The dealer's own workshop had pressure-tested and cleared the cooling system prior to sale. I later obtained the vehicle's full prior service history. It showed a documented cooling-system history predating my purchase, including oil mixing with coolant, and intercooler and EGR cooler replacements in the years before I bought the car. The repair cost me over R200,000 after a warranty contribution. Having lost confidence in the vehicle, I have since sold it at a substantial loss on what I paid.
I took the matter through the Motor Industry Ombudsman (MIOSA) and obtained legal advice. I am posting this as a factual account of my experience so that other buyers can make an informed decision.
My advice to anyone buying a used vehicle, from any dealer: have it independently inspected by a qualified mechanic or forensic assessor before you close the deal. It is the single step that would have changed my outcome.
