Do better SACAP
I have tried on numerous occasions (but have not received) to obtain proper information and assistance regarding registering as a professional instead of a candidate as I have nearly 20 years of experience working as a technologist. I have studied architecture and worked in the field for ages yet was not truly assisted with mentorship and registration and was told that it was not truly necessary because I was an employee under an architect. Which I accepted because I had no inclination to be self employed. However due to burn out I changed careers. I then suffered two strokes which had a disastrous impact on my mobility, but luckily my mental acuity was not impacted. However I can't become self employed as I can't return to my original chosen profession as I will not be allowed to work privately as a candidate (which I am decidedly NOT as I have mounds of real world experience as opposed to someone who has been a candidate for merely 3 years after finishing studies). I have now been forced to apply for a disability grant which is an absolute pittance despite yearning to work in architecture again. Yet draftsmen with little experience and less pride in their work are allowed to be "professionals". SACAP does not make any true allowance for work experience, quality of work and such. They talk big about "upholding the integrity of the profession" which is quite a creative work of fiction. SACAP loves collecting fees and plastering social media with cheap "name and shame" posts which in actual fact is detrimental to the integrity of the profession as it looks cheap and causes architectural professionals in general to come across as sniveling weaklings. I am not the only one in this boat: I know of a number of highly competent and talented technologists and architects who sadly chose to change careers entirely because of SACAP's ludicrous bureaucracy. Now the profession in South Africa is increasingly being filled with persons who have no to little pride in their work and very little true technical knowledge and experience, they merely enjoy the title. South Africa is supposedly a democratic country, however SACAP is making the architectural profession less than inclusive. Stop worrying about collecting fees and attending career events or whatever and start assisting persons who take actual pride in their work: THAT is upholding the integrity of the profession. Do better SACAP. Do better.
