Six Star Prices and Two Star Service

My partner and I have just spent the most disappointing weekend at the Palace. The service was disgraceful, particularly in the restaurants. The breakfast in the Crystal Room was like eating in a refugee camp rather than a five star restaurant. The staff were walking around aimlessly unable to deal with any query. When I finally found someone to dish me up some precooked scrambled egg, it turned out to be cold and congealed. The staff couldn't organise toast and I was astonished to find that there would only be bog standard brown bread available. When asking for plain yoghurt, I was given apricot flavour. I mean how low can a brand sink; especially an hotel as iconic as the Palace. The dinner in the Grill Room was even worse. The place was over-lit, under-heated and the food was wildly overpriced and of a very poor standard. The gormless staff were unprofessional and again unable to sort anything. By contrast we ate at the Greek Restaurant at the Cascades hotel on our second night: our service was superb and the food was more than satisfactory. Unlike at the Palace, both the waiter and manager clearly knew their jobs and they were able to ensure that guests' expectations were exceded. The weekend cost me nearly R9000 and I feel cheated by this overpriced, tacky hotel: Sol Kerzner must be turning in his grave. It is quite ironic that all of Sun City had excellent service when it had a virtual monopoly as a Casino Resort. Now it's got competition - it's standards have dropped completely
