Overcharging on Electricity Units (34% over Municipality Tariff)

Im paying 36% more per kwh unit than what our Municipality States I should pay. We are on a flat rate because we are a complex of R1,30 per kwh we are paying R2.02 per kwh (this time of year). Seems by looking at other comlaints that The Meter Man is overcharging everyone on units.

Phoned in and was told by a lady that she needs to see the units consumed on the property to help further. Doesnt make much sense as this doesnt have anything to do with the price of the units. They are selling units too expensive because its a **** easy and simple. An entire complex overpaying by 34% thats not a small amount of *****. Will take legal action if this is not resolved.

Hi Francois

The meters installed in this property are sub prepaid meters, and are set per the statement that is received when the meters are installed. Sub prepaid meters are installed as a management tool. The rate that the municipality charges might be a flat rate but some municipalities charge a demand and network charge, which is usually added to the kW unit rate to cover for that. If the rate on meters are not set per the municipal statement, an under recovery can occur and the whole building’s electricity will be cut. I have requested a statement for the property from the owner and are waiting for feedback from him. As soon as a new statement is received, the rate will be adjusted accordingly.

kind regards

Good day,

Per your discussion with Juliana yesterday, the rate on the meters were set when the meters were installed. The Meter Man is a sub metering company and sets the rate on the meters, and then pay over the amount collected through the meters, to the owner, who is then responsible to pay the municipal account.

The Meter Man does not receive a municipal account, and assumes then that the rates on the meters are set correct. It is the owner’s responsibility to advise The Meter Man if a rate that is set on a meter is either set too high to too low as they are receiving the municipal account and can compare that to the payment that The Meter Man is making.

I have requested statements from the owner a few times. I sent a mail yesterday again and received a response this morning saying that: “unfortunately we do not have the proper reading as yet, due to council not taking meter reading for the past few months.”

As soon as we get feedback from the owner we will adjust the rate accordingly.

Kind regards
