Any metering company, BUT Meter Man!

My electricity tripped while I was trying to plug in my microwave. Like anyone I called an electrician to come an help me. The electrician reported that there is nothing wrong with my plug or electricity connections in the house and that the problem was that the meter was not supplying electricity to the house. This is when I called 'the meter man\. we talked to a very rude woman who will not let you finish one sentence. she kept repeating one sentence that does not answer any of my questions \"You have to pay a R1000 because the meter box was tempered with\". What does tampering mean in the first place?? nothing was done to the meter, and how do they decide that there was tempering when they did not even come to inspect the meter? I was made to pay a R1000 because a \"temper seal\" was apparently removed from the meter. and this is not the only money making scheme that the meter man has. The complex had to complain to meter man before about the FAST rate at which the electricity units move, and by a miracle, it was altered. after paying the R1k they give you a code and your electricity is back. What happened to the electricity in the first place???? appalling."

Hello kefilwes,

The prepaid meter was installed 2013/11/14 and sealed with seal number J***. Inspection was then scheduled for the entire complex to inspect the meters on the 09/12/2015 and the same seal number J*** was still on the prepaid meter and the prepaid meter was working fine. 23/03/2016 the Revenue Department explained our procedure to the chairperson and yourself that when a meter is on a sad face it means that the cover of the meter has been opened and it has gone into tamper mode, and the chairperson confirmed that the seal was removed off the meter as he was present with you at the time of discussion. It was also explained to the chairperson and yourself that a R1000 penalty fee has to be paid for the meter to be activated again.

The prepaid meters are not remotely controlled and therefore we cannot disconnect the electricity from the office. The prepaid meter will only cut electricity if it is out of units or if the seal has been removed and the cover has been opened and the tamper switch activates and it cuts the electricity. In this case your meter had no seal and was on a sad face displayed on the LCD and electricity was off which detects tamper mode.
