Questionable business practices: beware of upfront payments

I booked several months ago for a girls’ weekend. I paid IN FULL, in good faith. I ultimately needed to cancel, but did so with 5 weeks’ notice.

When cancelling, I received a snotty reply to the effect that “refunds are only issued monthly”. Quite pecu****, given that we all know an EFT takes 3 minutes to effect, and the money does belong to the client.

This would be bad enough, but I ended up having to chase that money HARD. Many emails, strange excuses, then only 50% paid, more excuses. It left a very bad taste, and it’s just in the public interest to be wary of their deposits and upfront payments. Not all 5* establishments have 5* ethics and integrity.

It’s worth noting that I found people expressing similar frustrations on various social media platforms.
