Don't ever buy timeshare

Unfortunately I inherited membership to the Holiday club which feels more like a liability than anything else. Firstly I can normally only take leave in school holidays so choices over this period are extremely limited and require alot of points. What really frustrates me is that there is no flexibility. I made a booking 2 weeks ago using the online platform however now due to a family emergency I am no longer able to make this trip so simply want to move to another date. They tell me that they cannot move the date. I have been told that they can put the offer back online however if no one accepts the offer then I will loose my points as well as the additional funds that I have paid in (in rand terms this equates to approximately R14K for a weekend). In this day and age there is no longer a need to accept this kind of service and product. Firstly most hotel chains offer superior loyalty programmers with tangible rewards and booking flexibility as they want and appreciate your business. The likes of AIRBNB also allow more flexibility. If you are considering taking timeshare please think about it properly and from my personal perspective I would not recommend any kind of timeshare and will be looking to cancelling this service.

Hi Dylan,

Thank you for your post.

The Holiday Club has a cancellation structure in place to ensure maximum utilisation of stock.  It is important to note that all cancellations must be received more than 6 weeks prior to the occupation date in order to receive a full credit of your Points.  If cancellation notification is received between 3 to 6 weeks before occupation date you will only receive 50% credit.  No credit will be made if cancellation occurs within 3 weeks of the occupation date.

We are sure that you will agree with the fact that each organisation has to implement, and abide by, rules and procedures for the smooth operation and maximum service delivery of the relevant entity.

We confirm that you spoke to our Member Services department and advised that you needed to cancel the reservation as your wife is not able to get leave for the time period you have booked.  As your cancellation falls within the cancellation policy, you would forfeit all the Points used to secure the reservation.  We did, however, offer to cancel the reservation and should the unit get rebooked, you would be refunded the amount of Points that the unit is rebooked at.  You declined this offer.

We will arrange for a consultant to contact you to discuss the matter further.

Kind Regards,
The Holiday Club

Thanks your email above clarifies my point about being inflexible. Also note that I only recently made the booking so was automatically bound by your terms. You are correct as I did decline your gracious offer, if you read my initial comment I did not hide from this fact . The reason I declined is that I have no guarantee and would rather give this holiday to someone else. Timeshare is no longer an option and I will no longer be bul**** into inflexible terms. I would rather save the money I pay to timeshare and use as I deem fit.

Hi Dylan,

Thank you for taking the time to speak to our consultant yesterday.

We confirm that you have indicated that you will utilise the reservation for 1 night and then the guests that are going with you will stay on for the remainder of the time period booked.

Kind Regards,
The Holiday Club

Well nice try spinning this. Lets put the facts on the table I pay approximately R1000 per month to The Holiday Club. That equates to R12000 per annum. For this I get 28 points per year. I made a booking at Kiara Lodge for 32 points and also had to pay in approx R1500 for 3 night accommodation. I am offered no flexibility to move to another weekend as in the real world circumstances do often change. All I can do is cancel this request and hope that someone wants to use the holiday, potentially at a reduced points with the probable outcome being that no one takes the weekend and I am still left out of pocket. Yes I can go for one night. R13500 for one night! Thats a great resolution and I cant wait to go. What would have been nice if you acknowledged that I could not go and moved to another weekend where there is availability. All I want is people to fully understand what they are getting themselves into when taking out timeshare. THERE IS NO FLEXIBILITY!!!
