A free getaway prize turned into a R13k debt.
My partner and I were walking along the beach in Blaauwberg, when a friendly guy stopped us and asked us to pick a scratch card for a chance to win cool prizes. To our surprise, I won a getaway on the garden route. To claim the prize, we had to go to the Holiday Club to listen to a presentation, sounded simple enough and so off we went. This is where we met a consultant, Andre, who convinced us to join them for R677. 16 per month. Being in hospitality and having minimal family time due to our strenuous hours and being first time parents for only a few months, we decided to join. They gave us an iPad on which to sign. There was no figures shown, just an empty block to sign in which my partner did. *****ie mistake on our part. However this was a Christian company, of course we could trust them, well so we thought.) They then told me because we are signing up, my holiday that I just won will be taken away and in return, I will get extra points. I confirmed and paid a deposit of R6000. Two weeks later we got a phone call from one of the consultants who mentioned our monthly installment of R1300 and odd. We immediately asked them what's going on, how is the installment doubled and they explained that it is a yearly annual fee or some sort that we were not aware of. We immediately canceled the membership because this was way out of our budget and we just simply could not afford it. They contacted us to say that unfortunately we signed and it's past the cooling off period of 5 days (which once again we did not even know about) and that we are liable to pay another R7500 to get out of the contract and of course they keep our 6k deposit so this meant that we were left to pay R13 000 for absolutely nothing, no holiday not even the one we supposedly won. R13k for signing a piece of paper and a membership that lasted two weeks. Even after canceling, they still debited the monthly installment and we had to go to the bank to stop them. They told us that they won't stop until we pay the R7500 surrender fee. We are refusing to pay the R7500 for nothing and they said we will be blacklisted. The consultant Andre was so rude and abrupt after we told him that he did not disclose the correct figures to us but his response is that it was in the contract which we read a little too late. I hope that they provide their staff with proper training on how to sell these packages and that they do not hide costs. This is a sensitive time for everyone financially and people work hard for their money, to be ****** so blindly is so unfair and disheartening. I hope going forward that they do follow up calls to ask their clients whether they received their contracts and are happy prior to their cooling off period. It's only the right and professional thing to do but this is a lesson we'll learnt. Be Careful!!!! If it sounds too good to be true, it is!!!!!!!
