Bad service from Courier guy

I bought pedestals and needed transport from the courier guy Vanderbijlparkand they charged R1185 when the items I arrived all were damaged and I refused to take them and now they need R1425 for returning them back . So is this how courier guy works or raise their revenue by damaging the clients goods then charge them for returning them .they say it not their negligence but from where I am it is .goods were not tied nicely resulting in them knocking the sides of a ven because the leg of one pedestal is no longer there both of them a broken
