I am writing this review to highlight the deeply troubling experiences my partner and I had at The Capital on Bath, as well as the unacceptable way we were treated following a serious security breach at my partner’s apartment, Unit 226, in the early hours of 09 April 2025. At around 2:00 AM, my partner was violently assaulted inside the apartment by seven men. While my partner personally recognised two of the individuals, none of them were invited, authorised, or permitted to enter the apartment. My partner was asleep at the time, and no request for access was made through the appropriate channels, despite The Capital’s strict visitor policies. This situation is especially concerning because management had previously warned my partner that no groups of visitors are allowed after 10:00 PM, a rule my partner consistently respected. Yet, despite these strict rules, seven unauthorised individuals were somehow able to access both the building and the unit without my partner’s knowledge or consent, exposing a complete failure in security and access control on the part of The Capital on Bath. The incident was enabled by the fact that the apartment door could not lock properly. The latch and key mechanism were broken, and my partner had reported that the access card had stopped working. Instead of addressing the defective lock—a fundamental safety issue—my partner was simply told to pay for a replacement access card, leaving the underlying problem unresolved. As a result, the door remained unsecured, allowing the assailants to enter freely. After the attack, my partner reported the incident to The Capital. We were informed that an internal investigation was underway, involving CCTV review and staff statements. However, we were initially denied access to the camera footage, even though it was directly relevant to the assault. It was only after my partner’s father intervened that the footage was finally released to us. Shockingly, we also discovered that there are no cameras in the hallways of The Capital on Bath. For an establishment that emphasises its security measures, the absence of surveillance in crucial areas is unacceptable and places residents at serious risk. The mistreatment did not end there. On the 01 December 2025 we attempted to retrieve a television that belonged to us on the day of inspection, the maintenance man threatened to call security and SAPS to escort us out of the building. This was completely inappropriate, especially considering that the landlord had already violated her own lease agreement, leaving us to reasonably believe that the lease was no longer valid. Instead of providing assistance or facilitating a constructive resolution, The Capital’s staff escalated the situation and treated us with hostility while we were simply trying to retrieve our own property. Overall, this experience left my partner and me feeling unsafe, unsupported, and deeply mistreated. A violent assault—made possible by preventable security failures—occurred on their premises, yet we were met with obstruction, ************, and a lack of compassion when seeking answers and trying to resolve subsequent issues. No resident should ever have to experience what my partner and I went through. The Capital on Bath in Rosebank JHB urgently needs to improve its security infrastructure, install proper hallway surveillance, enforce consistent access controls, and most importantly, reconsider how it treats residents who raise legitimate and serious concerns. Until meaningful improvements are made, I cannot recommend this establishment as a safe or professionally managed environment.
