Parents of Neurodivergent Children: Please Read Before Visiting

I recently visited The Beaches to explore whether it would be a good fit for my son, who will be entering Grade R next year and is on the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, my experience was deeply disappointing and hurtful. During my visit, I was referred from the Grade R teacher to the Head of Department, who repeatedly referred to autistic children as “those children,” in a tone that felt dismissive and stigmatizing. The Grade 1 teacher also spoke about previous autistic students in a demeaning way, describing their completely normal stimming behaviors with visible disgust. Instead of discussing how the school could support neurodivergent learners, the conversation centered on how these children “cannot function in a mainstream school,” as though the issue lies with the children rather than with the school’s lack of understanding or inclusivity. As the conversation continued, it became increasingly clear that my concerns were not being heard and that the environment was neither informed nor supportive. I ended the meeting myself once it reached a point where I could no longer tolerate the insensitive comments. I left in tears. After I phoned the principal, she apologized and said she would follow up. However, the message I received the next morning simply reiterated that the school is mainstream with large classes and wished us well—without addressing any of the concerns I raised or acknowledging the inappropriate remarks made by her staff. My intention was simply to find the right environment for my child. Instead, I left feeling dismissed, judged, and deeply saddened by the lack of awareness, empathy, and professionalism shown. I sincerely hope the school invests in training and develops a more respectful and informed approach to neurodiversity in the future.
