The Animal Pro Cruelty League
oday, 04/09/2026, my cat went into labor with serious complications, and I want to share what happened when I turned to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League for help — because other pet owners deserve to know this before they end up where I was. My cat was first seen at an animal hospital in Bellville, who placed an IV and kept her overnight. They could not perform the surgery she needed, and referred me to the AACL, telling me these are people who genuinely look after animals properly. That trust was not met. I first went to the AACL's Bellville branch, where I was turned away and told they could not help me. At that branch, I was also told that their policy is to end all remaining kittens during this kind of procedure, regardless of whether they are still alive — not because saving them isn't possible, but because it is their standard practice. I then went to their Epping branch, and that is where my cat was mistreated. When I arrived, my cat was in active labor, in visible pain, with kittens still inside her. Instead of treating her first, the focus was immediately on payment. I told staff honestly that I had 200 rand available, and offered a payment arrangement, showing I'm someone who reliably pays what I owe. I was told I needed to pay half the bill upfront regardless, with no room to negotiate. I was told the same thing here too — that all remaining kittens would be ended regardless of whether they were alive. Two separate branches, the same stated policy. When I asked for my cat back so I could find help elsewhere, I watched a staff member take my cat, who was mid-labor and clearly suffering, and put her back into her carrier roughly. I will not forget that. I drove her, in that condition, to another vet, who told me the kittens dying inside her was not the only danger — my cat herself was dying. Not just the kittens she was carrying, but my cat's own life was at risk. That vet told me plainly that if I had arrived any later, she would not have survived. The vet was shocked by what I was telling her on how the AACL treated my cat. During surgery, that vet also found internal damage. Given what I personally witnessed of how she was handled at the AACL, I strongly suspect that treatment is what caused it. That vet treated her immediately and sorted payment afterward. My cat is alive tonight only because of them, not because of the organization whose name claims to stand against animal cruelty. This isn't about affordability being used as an excuse. I was upfront about what I could pay and asked for exactly the kind of arrangement any reasonable emergency care provider offers. What I got instead was a policy of payment first, and a stated practice of ending kittens regardless of whether they could be saved — while my own cat's life hung in the balance the entire time. I'm sharing this so other pet owners know what actually happens at the AACL before they trust them with an animal's life.

Stick with your hours AACL
After trying to call to make sure their Saturday hours and getting no one to pick the the phone up we decided to drive to AACL Epping because Google gave their hours as closing at 1130am. The idea, surrender 9 kittens and their mothers because we could not afford to keep them. We arrived at 1040am to be told we closed early today! Needless to say the trauma my kids who helped me with the cats they love, suffered because of AACL Epping closing early!

POOR SERVICE
Called the AACL on Thursday at 09:00 15/012026 regarding our small Pekinese who had a very bad abscess that was oozing badly. They told us to please come on Friday 16/01/2026 and to be there by 08:30. On arrival we were told sorry they are fully booked as they opened at 07:30, but they do not do bookings anyway, and by the way she can recommend other places we could take our pet. Though they cater for the pensioners and underprivileged to sent to another veternarian we cannot afford. The receptions told us she would ask the doctor if he would see our pet, but assured us that he would not because he was extremely busy. She then said we can bring our pet tomorrow Saturday 17/01/2026 but could assure us that we would be able to see the vet on this day either. They are suppose to be open until 16:30 and on arrival at 08:30 told that sorry they cannot see anymore pets, not that there were a lot of people waiting. Really great service turning people away. They also charge an arm and leg for their services, because the SPCA do not have Vets on site to see your animal anymore.

Negligence at its worse
Honestly so disappointed they claim to protect animals as well as their well being but that doesn't seem to be true. My puppy got sick and refused to eat his food the night before(Friday night) Saturday morning we decided to take him to aacl regents park as we thought they would be the best to help but what do we get them telling us they cannot open new client files on a weekend we then explained to them what is going on with our puppy and that it is possibly an emergency then we were told to visit another vet to get medication to assist until they can help us on Monday only. And from there our puppy has just grown weaker and might not make it through the night is this their way of helping animals. Yet they are quick to want to go for people who neglect their animals and leave them critical yet what are they doing... Makes me think if this is the case with everyone that is new to aacl, so they basically implying that your pet can only have an emergency Monday to Friday otherwise they can't help MAKES NO SENSE!!!

Very disgusted customer
Is it fair to wait so long just for the vet to see to your pet. My husband and daughter has been waiting for over 2 and a half hours already. My dog is very bloated and yet, they make them wait. I am truly appalled! Yet they want payment for their bad service
