*****ulant fuel charge

On 15 Feb 2017 I hired a car for the day at King Shaka Tempest and only drove +/-35km the day.

Refueled the car at KSIA Sasol and then returned the vehicle.

Let’s say the vehicle was heavy for a 1.4 liter Ford Figo hatch (8l/100km consumption)

35km / 100km x 8 litres = 2.8 litres

That means I should have used, max 3 litres of fuel.

I filled the car with over 5 litres of fuel

The following day I received an invoice for additional 2 litres of fuel with a R15 admin fee.

I queried this and they say that this is standard practice to top op the vehicle after each use to ensure that every customer get a full vehicle.

Assume the car was filled when I received it, this means that the car used a total of 7.885 litres of fuel and only travelled 35km. This gives a fuel consumption of 22.529 l/100km

Tempest further had the knack for saying that there seems to be fault with the vehicle due to the high fuel consumption and will request our work shop to asses. Now why must the customer pay for one of their faulty vehicles?

The logical explanation to me is that I never received a car that was fully filled, contradictory to their claims.

Looking on HelloPeter, I’m not the only person with this type of dilemma – non of which are resolved yet.

I believe that this is now standard practice how they overcharge their customers and I would advise to rather use another rental agency.
