Policy Cancelled Without My Knowledge After Almost a Year of Payments

I am extremely disappointed with the way my policy with Santam Switch was handled.

I recently discovered that emails sent to me in December regarding my policy had gone directly to my spam folder, which meant I was completely unaware that there was any issue requiring my attention. What is most frustrating is that there was no follow-up phone call to confirm whether I wanted to continue my policy.

I have paid for almost an entire year, and yet my policy was cancelled without any direct attempt to contact me. As a customer who values having insurance cover in place, I would absolutely have continued the policy if someone had simply called to confirm.

The situation has become even more upsetting because I now need to submit a claim, only to be told that my policy essentially “does not exist” anymore. To make matters worse, I was informed that if I now sign up with Santam Direct, they cannot cover me for this claim.

This feels extremely unfair, especially when this entire situation could have been avoided with proper communication.

I sincerely hope Santam Switch reviews this matter urgently and reinstates my policy, as this cancellation happened due to a clear communication gap and not because I intended to cancel my cover.

Hi Nadia,

We're sorry to hear that you were unaware of the changes that took place with Switch.

We elected to make use of email and sms as our communication channels for this move, as these methods have proven to be most effective in relaying important information. Due to the low success rate of phone-based communication, it was unfortunately not feasible to include this for our entire policyholder base.

Communication was sent out to all Switch clients on 1 December, notifying them that Switch policies will be canceled due to a strategic business decision made by Santam. A reminder email and sms was also sent out on 12 December. On 19 December, a second notice went out, granting an extension to 31 January.

During this transition, all Switch clients were given the opportunity to move their cover over to Santam Direct.

To date, we see that we have not received any email communication on the matter from you. Should you wish to transition to Santam Direct, you are welcome to reach out to us at *** for assistance.

To date, I have only received one email dated 1 December, which I only discovered today in my spam folder. The reason you have not heard from me is because I did not see that email at the time, and I also did not receive any SMS notification regarding the matter.

Had I been aware of the communication, I would have responded immediately, as I had every intention of continuing my policy.

When I spoke to someone at Santam Direct, I was informed that I would need to complete a completely new application. This feels extremely unfair given that the lack of response from my side was due to the email going to my spam folder and the absence of any further attempt to contact me.

I would like to continue my cover. Unfortunately, I cannot see the contact details you shared in your response to this review, so I would appreciate it if you could please provide them again or contact me directly.

Hi Nadia,

We note that you never confirmed your mobile number on the Switch app. It would therefore not have been possible to call you to let you know about Switch's closure.

We have sent you an email where you can confirm your mobile number in order for Santam Direct to contact you and set up your new policy for you.
