Good Morning We have received the technical chemical report from our service provider (see attached). It would seem that there has been a chemical spill in this vehicle Causing the rust to accelerate through the vehicle. Unfortunately we cannot assist in the repair of this vehicle, as it is not a quality of product issue based on the findings of this report. Please contact your dealer directly as to the way forward. No: ********** 391 CELL: ********** www.scroobyslab.co.za Suzuki Auto P O Box 1995 KELVIN 2196 14 December 2016 ATTENTION: Mr Robert Cleary / Ms Sarah Burkey REFERENCE No: 20871 Assessment of corrosion in a Suzuki Swift Suzuki Auto requested that the possible cause of ferrous corrosion to be investigated in a Suzuki Swift. The vehicles details are as follows; Vin Number: JSAFZC82S ********** 0, Engine Number: K14B102564 Model: Suzuki Swift Colour: Grey Ferrous corrosion was noted on uncoated components of the interior of the vehicle. (Figures 1 to 4) indicate areas under the dashboard. Swab samples were taken from these areas and identified as steering column (Figures 3 and 4) and under dashboard (Figures 1 and 2) The driver’s seat was removed by a Suzuki technician and ferrous rust was noted on the underside, (Figure 5). It was noted that the mat under the driver’s seat was damp and the part of the body that was visible through the inspection hole of the mat was also damp, (Figures 6 and 7). Swab samples were taken from under the driver seat and from under the mat, via the inspection hole, and identified as such. These swab samples were tested for the presence of Sulphates, Nitrates and Chlorides. Low concentrations of Chlorides were detected on the steering column and under dashboard samples. These concentrations would be similar to those of naturally occurring chlorides. However Chloride concentrations found under the driver’s seat and under the mat were excessively high. Substantially higher than what would be considered as naturally occurring. No Sulphates or Nitrates were detected on any component tested. Conclusion The excessively high concentrations of Chlorides found under the driver’s seat and under the mat is possibly an indication that they came into direct contact with a chlorinated substance such as, swimming pool acid or cleaning product chemicals. The presence of ferrous corrosion evident elsewhere inside the vehicle could possibly have been caused by the presence of the fumes from these acids and/or chemicals, circulated by the fan system within the vehicle. It is not possible to determine the time frame between the ‘suspected spill’ and when the samples were taken, however chlorine corrosion happens fairly quickly.
