Disappointment at Sun City Cabanas

We try to go yearly to Sun City as it is one of our favourite places, celebrating our engagement and birthdays there. We usually stay at the Cascades but this was a trying year and could afford the slightly cheaper Cabanas only. Let me tell you the service levels could not be more different. Not only were we ignored basically for every enquiry we had from drinks at the pool to turning down the sleeper couch for the kids, but then there was unfortunately a fire on Saturday 16th Sep. Thankfully no one was hurt but this was a lesson in disaster management for this hotel! Firstly, a message came over the speaker saying a drill was happening and guests need not take part in meeting at the assembly point. My daughter was in the shower so I heard this and thought no problem, it is a drill we can relax. We then stepped outside of the room and saw there were billows of smoke and actually this was not a drill! Excuse me but how unsafe is this message playing making you think it was just a drill and there was no actually danger, when in fact there was a raging fire right next to our building. I hauled my child out the shower and we made our way to the assembly point. Were we sat for 3 hours and wasted an afternoon... Eventually I went to find a hotel worker who could possibly inform us of what we should do next. Nobody had the faintest idea and people were getting annoyed at this point. Finally we were told it was all clear to return to our rooms. Our rooms which had no power, no Wifi and no telephone lines. We then spent the better part of an hour waltzing around looking for someone who could come turn down the sleeper couch for the kids to go to bed. Grudgingly someone finally turned up to do this. While I understand a fire is awful and not foreseen, you would expect a world class resort to have a better grip on a situation like this. We were only there for a weekend and this ruined the trip. The kids were so disappointed in the weekend and it feels like a waste of money at this point. There was no empathy for the families who paid for certain amenities for the weekend, and the staff you could find made you feel like you were inconveniencing them. Like I said, this was an unfortunate disaster but you would think there would be things in place for events like this where guests would not feel displaced and out of pocket for what they paid for. This isn't acceptable for families paying good money to give their child a memorable holiday.
