Accused of theft of socks

I mistakenly walked out of the Stuttafords shop with a pair of socks I had picked up without paying for them. I went into the jewelry shop (Bellagio) right across the Stuttafords. When I got to the jewelry shop I realized that I had taken the socks and had not paid. I even exclaimed such to the lady who was assisting us. We were still making a purchase at the jewelry store when we realized that there was stuttafords people outside. My partner and the jewelry store security went to explain to them that we were aware that we had taken the socks by mistake and as soon as we finish with the transaction at the jewelry store we would pay for the socks.When we later tried to go back to Stuttafords to pay for the socks we were told that the fact that we had walked out of the shop with the socks was proof of theft. We tried to explain to the store manager who is a lady that that was not the case. We had made a mistake and had come back to pay for the socks. We were called all manner of names and an argument broke out. We are very shocked at this treatment as we were made to feel like petty ******* when our intention was to rectify the mistake. This is totally unacceptable.
