It is PAINFUL to wear Steve Madden and- awful customer service

"Inspiring a "new generation" with fearless spirit and authenticity." That is what their rep, Michelle da Fonseca recently wrote while celebrating a New York Times article praising the brand's boldness and legacy.

So, let us have a chat about what it's actually like to wear Steve Madden as a part of that new generation.

I bought a pair of Steve Madden sandals (Mythical) in March 2025. They fit better than the original Mona sandal I went in for. But after wearing them just three times, it became clear that they're all looks! They're made with poor materials (specifically on the upper straps), badly contructed, and without care for comfort. They are simply NOT WEARABLE. I am NOT putting plasters and tape on shoes that are priced R1499. How embarassing for them!

The first time I wore them, it was for a quick outing- too quick to notice how bad the damage was. The second time, the blisters were painful and raw after 20 minutes. I decided to give them another go. The third time, I was limping through the mall, skin broken on the tops of my feet with blister fluid building up under the sandals. I had to go home early because of the pain. Is this how Steve Madden designs and makes shoes now? Do they come with a time limit of 10 minute wear or else injury?

NO SHOE, especially one from a 'premium, luxury' brand should leave you physically wounded. When I reached out online I was told 'sorry for the inconvenience', before I was told to go in store. Absolutely frustrating and outrageous!

In store, I was told that the area manager under Mall of Africa branch said, 'uncomfortable shoes' don't qualify for an exchange. The gall! And this is even though their own terms and conditions say defective goods can be returned within 6 months. Shoes that CAUSE open blisters are not just uncomfortable, THEY ARE DEFECTIVE.

I am extremely angry not just with the product but with how lightly my complaint and my injury was dismissed. After I did my own quick investigation in store I feel like shortcuts were taken in the construction/materials of this shoe and customers are left to deal with the fallout.

Myself and the woman around me don't want any pity. We want ACCOUNTABILITY. I hope this review helps others think twice. If no action should be taken (A FULL REFUND), I will be making a video demo of what happens if you should have a day out wearing Steve Madden because the 'new generation' they're speaking to deserves the truth!

I wore Steve Madden on my wedding day. That's how much I loved the brand. SM was the only one that got it right. Please note- I'm not just an angry customer. I'm a writer, I'm a business owner, I'm a woman that knows how a good pair of shoes can make you feel when all of those titles are stripped by the end of the working day. If this is the legacy then I want no part of it. Nothing about this experience feels bold, authentic, or powerful. It feels really cheap, painful and disappointing. Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere cool kids.

Disclaimer-Before Steve Madden I had no foot health issues or allergies whatsoever.
