what have i been paying for

i have recently found out that my policy that has been running for a few years is in actual fact not going to pay out as they did not specify when making the call that i needed to go for various tests, also they did not tell me that the pay out amount does not increase only the monthly installments do, i want a refund and i want to move elsewhere, is this even legal ? Also they are quick to say when they increase the installments but do not ask to update medical records,
