This company declined to cover me because I struggled with postpartum depression.

According to the sales agent that I spoke to, I am high-risk as I am going to die. Which defeats the object of getting life cover.

Pregnant women remain one of the most vulnerable group in society. Along with the stigmatization that comes along with mental conditions, Stangen has just confirmed that they don’t care if you struggled after having a baby. In fact, the whole process of creating life and dealing with the subsequent struggles of motherhood are an inconvenience to them and just bad for business.

Stangen believes it is too risky to cover me because I had postpartum depression. As if having a mental condition is a choice. One out of every seven women struggles with postpartum depression. That’s a significant percentage. Significant enough to warrant recognition and protection. This is something Stangen will not do for me.

Stangen will cover you if you have had cancer before. They did not cover me because I have had postpartum depression and dealt with all of its associated risks.

They cover cancer because they can see cancer. They don’t see mental illness, so they can’t see them. Therefore, they must not exist, and anyway, I’m going to die so it's not worth covering my life. For the well-being of my children long after I have passed away. The very consequence of me giving birth is the same reason why I can't take care of their future.

There is no cure for cancer. But there are treatments for it. Just as there are treatments for postpartum depression. I made it because of those treatments. My children have a mother because I did everything that I needed to do to stay alive. I fought and I won. But I won’t get the same recognition as a person in remission for cancer, because Stangen has this idea that I chose to get postpartum depression of my own free will.

As a mother and survivor of postpartum depression, they don’t care that you’re still alive, because according to them, they have already decided you’re going to die.
