Standard Bank Insurance.....Never give up and fight for what is right and good against these guys!
Emergency tree felling services is included in my policy. When a 10m high tree sheered in two due to high winds I immediately registered a claim. Firstly I was instructed to find my own tree feller and obtain a quotation. I issued the quotation to Standard Bank Insurance in October 2020 and after 4 days of numerous emails and phone calls to them, no response. On advise from my lawyer I was advised to proceed with the tree felling as I could be held liable if the tree finally fell over and injured or killed someone as I am the homeowner and aware of the sheered tree. I paid the full amount and sent Standard Bank Insurance records of their portion of the bill as per the quote and invoice from the service provider. After some time I recieved a letter wherein Standard Bank Insurance wanted me to settle for a payment which was less than 25% of the actual cost. They left me no choice but to register a complaint with the short-term Ombudsman in November and eventually by 22 December 2020, Standard Bank insurance decided to honor the claim, signed an Agreement of Loss and proceeded with an sms issued by Standard Bank Insurance informing me that the money has been transferred into my account and would take 4 days to clear. By 2 January 2021 no funds were found in my account and I started making enquiries as I worked my way up the chain of command over the period of another two weeks. Standard Bank Insurance Ombudsman complaints staff managed to determine via their Finance Department that there was a banking error on their side and that no monies were transfer. Remember that I paid for the emergency tree felling out of my own pocket in October 2020 already and we were the on 14 January 2021 and Standard Bank Insurance had still not honored the written agreement and transferred the funds into my account. Finally after enquiring how it is possible that a bank like Standard Bank cannot transfer a small amount of money to an account at another South African bank and reading their email response informing me that they they need to find a "solution", I cracked up and could not take them seriously any longer. For my own sanity sake I needed to start finding some humor within the situation. Imagine a major Bank being unable to perform a transaction and transfer R3335 from their account into a clients account at another major South African bank for a period of three (3) weeks.....ha-ha-ha-ha...LOL. They after I started making fun of them and almost three months after the initial claim was registered I recieved my earth shattering R3335 from Standard Bank Insurance. Good luck to any customer submitiing a claim and hoping for honour, truthfulness and a pleasant experience. I spent in excess of 80man hours, hundreds of rands in data and phone calls from home attempting to get Standard Bank Insurance to honor their agreement. All that is left is to find the time to move my home insurance elsewhere.....whoop-whoop
