Standard Bank Insurance Refusing Second Opinion
Last week, during some event over the weekend, my equipment at home got hit by lightning/surge - No one is sure exactly what happened, but the people that did the assessment stated that most of my home electronics are beyond economical repair & had to be replaced. I submitted the claim, with the report & replacement quote. The guy asked me to send some docs, which I did, and he advised me he will have feedback by Thursday 07.03.2019.
On Thursday I contacted them & was told by some oke, that they did not get my documents. After a bit of a struggle, he decided that I should email him the documents directly, which I did.
After holding on for almost 15min, on my own airtime, the guy comes back & advises me that my claim is rejected due to my policy stating surge damage is not covered, which I understand , but I requested that a second opinion is considered, since I strongly do not believe it was surge, but lightning damage through my network. - I obviously got a bit agitated, especially since he was adamant that my claim is rejected, without even considering my second opinion request. I told him if he wants to send me a rejection letter, he might as well send me a cancellation, because I am NOT accepting that. I could hear in his voice he was also agitated with me, but in all honesty, I just found out that I lost R20 000 worth of equipment because my insurer refuses to have my stuff looked at by a second opinion SP. This consultant that helped me, even told me that there are ways to differentiate between lightning & surge damage, which is awesome, because next... I did the following...
So after that I decided I am not gonna let it slide, and got a 2nd and 3rd opinion myself, by experts in the field of electronics, and they both advised me that it was lightning damage, since all the items affected was connected to my local network. Now I can obviously not do anything with these opinions, but I would definitely not recommend using STD Bank Insurance as your insurance provider, because trust me, they will make sure you get treated as if though you didn't even have insurance in the first place.
