Solar Geyser Repair
Around 18 November, our solar geyser stopped heating and pumping, so we contacted Standard Bank Insurance. The solar control panel was reading room temperature. They sent out Dave Miller Plumbers, who accused us of “switching off” the geyser at an inaccessible switch in the roof. That night lights on the control panel started flashing, and by morning, the control panel was blank and not working. Dave Miller said the geyser had a leak and needed to be replaced, so they took out the old geyser, spilling dirty water which damaged the ceiling. They put in a 400 kPa valve into our main water inlet, and we now have loud water hammer when opening taps. They said they were not qualified to do the electrical connection, and the electricians sent by Standard Bank did not know how to connect the solar control system. They offered to connect the geyser without the control system, which we did not want to do. All this time, we had been contacting the Insurance to send out someone who is solar system approved. Then Dave Miller Plumbers said they had made a mistake and needed to replace a galvanised valve with a brass valve. We have not signed off on any work yet, as the geyser has not been tested, and the control system is not working. Standard Bank Insurance now claims that three experts have said the control system was so old that it stopped working, so they will not pay to repair/replace it. The so-called experts are the plumbers and electrician who know nothing about solar control! We have phoned Standard Bank Insurance at least 7 times in the past four weeks and emailed 4 times, and they promise to phone back – we are still waiting for a call. Come on Standard Bank! We have been loyal clients for over 30 years, but are now looking at alternatives!!
