No transparency when it comes to life insurance

I am beyond frustrated and outraged by the way Standard Bank Insurance has handled our claim.

My husband took out a policy with Standard Bank Insurance, and when we submitted a claim, we were informed that the policy allegedly provides “accidental cover only.” This is extremely concerning. My husband has a chronic illness, and it is highly questionable that he would knowingly take out accidental-only cover given his medical condition. If this is truly the case, then serious questions must be asked about how this policy was sold and whether full and proper disclosure was made at the time.

What is even more alarming is that Standard Bank Insurance has refused to provide me with a copy of the insurance contract. Rejecting a claim while withholding the actual policy document is completely unacceptable. As a spouse seeking clarity, I have every right to understand the terms being re**** upon to deny this claim.

The lack of transparency, accountability, and compassion during an already distressing time is deeply disappointing. Instead of support, we have been met with vague responses and resistance.

If this matter is not urgently and properly reviewed, I will have no choice but to escalate it formally to the Ombudsman for Long-Term Insurance and pursue further regulatory intervention. I will also be requesting a full record of advice and sales disclosures related to this policy.

Customers deserve honesty, clear communication, and fair treatment — not obstruction and silence.

I expect Standard Bank Insurance to provide the full policy documentation immediately and to conduct a fair and transparent reassessment of this claim.

Hi Standard Bank,

Thank you for your response and for acknowledging my complaint.

I appreciate that the matter will be assigned to a resolution specialist. However, I would like to emphasise the seriousness of my concerns and the need for a clear and transparent outcome.

My key concerns remain:
  • The rejection of the claim based on “accidental cover only,” which does not align with my understanding of my husband’s situation
  • The lack of access to the insurance contract, which I have requested and am entitled to review

I kindly request that the resolution specialist provide:
  • A copy of the full policy document
  • A clear explanation for the claim decision
  • Any relevant information regarding how the policy was sold and explained

I trust that this matter will be handled with the urgency and fairness it deserves. I will await further contact and a detailed response.

Kind regards
PNM

Hi,

I can acknowledge that someone from the funeral and not life cover contacted me. This is becoming frustrating again.

No senior person has tried to contact me at all. Also, kindly advise whether I will be assisted or not. I have tried my utmost best to be patient with you guys, but I'm honestly disappointed more than anything.

Regards,
PNM

Hi,

I am writing to follow up once again, as I have still not received a meaningful response to my previous correspondence.

To date, I have only been contacted by the funeral cover team, which does not address my concerns relating to the life cover policy. Furthermore, no senior representative has made contact with me, despite my explicit request.
The continued lack of communication and failure to address this matter is unacceptable. I have exercised patience throughout this process, but this situation has now reached a point where it requires urgent intervention.

Please provide, without further delay:
  • A clear update on whether my matter will be properly investigated and resolved
  • Confirmation of when I will be contacted by a senior or relevant representative
  • A copy of the policy documentation previously requested

Should I not receive a satisfactory response within 48 hours, I will proceed with lodging a formal complaint with the Ombudsman for Long-Term Insurance, as well as pursue further regulatory escalation if necessary.

I trust that this matter will now be treated with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.

Regards,
PNM

This is totally unacceptable. You keep sending automated messages, and never does a senior get in touch to resolve this issue

Clearly, Standard Bank does not take me seriously, and it shows with their automated responses. This has got to be one of the worst Customer/ client services to date
