Claim rejected for poor work done before I purchased my home

I just purchased my new home, and due to the storms in Cape Town, suffered water damage when water damage caused the ceilings to collapse.

I raised a claim and had an assessor visit our home.

5 Days later, with multiple phone calls and follow ups from our side, we got confirmation that our claim has been rejected and that there will be no cover for work performed on the house, even though it was performed before we took ownership of the house.

I find this rediculous, and now sit with a collapsed ceiling, and my home insurance refuses to cover the costs of repairs of the leaking roof, or the ceiling.

I also do not believe that a comprehensive assessment has been done to prove where the water leak was, and what the actual reason was for the damage.

I will recommend to anyone needing home insurance NOT to use Standard Bank Insurance, for a few reasons:

- They will do their utmost to avoid paying claims out

- Their service is poor and requires continous follow ups

- Their processes are so long winded, and forced is to object to their rejection once we have received their official rejection letter...this living in a home without a ceiling for weeks / months.

I find Standard Bank Insurance's service poor and will cancel my policy immediately. I would urge anyone else to do the same, and find a proper insurance company that would act in your interest.

Regards

Darrel Bremer
