Check your Standard Bank home owners insurance very carefully
Absolutely disgusting behaviour from Standard bank insurance, after 15 years of paying my homeowners insurance I noticed that the insured value of my property seemed a bit high. After querying this, I was advised that they would send out an assessor to valuate my property, this did not happen so I called them again. The assessor came out and the calculated value was approximately R1,3m less than the insured value. Apparently Standard Bank insurance did a desktop valuation to get the original value. After bringing this to their attention, I was advised that I would get a refund on my higher premium but this was calculated from 2018. I made numerous attempts to try and get an explanation on how they arrived at this figure and have still not heard from them regarding this. On 20 August I was advised that they would be doing an additional refund after taking the matter to the Ombudsman. I requested details on what the full refund amount would be and I received feedback from their underwriters stating that no further refund will be due because I did not query the replacement value on their annual renewal notices. I find this very strange because if that is the case then I would not be due a refund as per their original offer which was calculated from 2018. This has been a very frustrating exercise and it feels as if they are not prepared to take responsibility for mistakes made from their side.
