Difficult PGCE Application Process – Hoping for Guidance to Move Forward

I feel compelled to leave this review both to share my experience and to inform others who may be considering studying through STADIO, particularly those applying for the PGCE programme. Over the past two weeks, I have been trying to apply for a PGCE through STADIO with the help of a colleague, and unfortunately the process has been quite frustrating and confusing.

Each time we submitted the application, we received automated emails stating that documentation was missing; however, when logging into the submission portal, there was no clear indication of which documents were missing or what needed to be corrected. This left us stuck in a loop with no clear guidance on how to resolve the issue. We attempted to contact STADIO multiple times by phone to get assistance, but many of the calls unfortunately dropped.

On the rare occasions we managed to get through, we were transferred between departments without receiving clear assistance before the call disconnected again. With the application deadline approaching, this made the process increasingly stressful as we were simply trying to ensure that everything had been submitted correctly. Eventually, we received a rejection email stating that the documentation provided was not sufficient for entry.

Upon further enquiry, we were informed that the application required a SAQA equivalence certificate because the degree was completed at a foreign university, as well as a minimum of 24–25 credits (or NQF Level 6) in Psychology to qualify for the Life Orientation PGCE. This was extremely confusing because the application already included a SAQA equivalence certificate confirming that the degree carries 360 credits and translates to an NQF Level 7 qualification.

In addition, the academic transcript clearly indicates that Psychology was completed at Level 6. The transcript also includes Anatomy and Physiology modules that contribute relevant subject knowledge applicable to a PGCE pathway. This left us uncertain as to what aspects of the application had actually been reviewed during the evaluation process. We immediately attempted to appeal the decision and seek clarification. However, the response took several days and was unfortunately quite brief, offering little guidance on what the next steps could be or who we should communicate with further.

We were also referred to a programme recruitment manager who kindly attempted to direct us to the correct individual, yet after several follow-ups requesting a short call to discuss the situation, we did not receive a response before the deadline. What was particularly disappointing was that no potential alternatives or solutions were suggested. If there were genuine gaps in the qualification requirements, it would have been helpful to know whether there was an option to complete an additional module alongside the PGCE or whether there might be an alternative pathway available especially considering the additional module would roughly require 125 credits give or take and the applicant has a valid 360 credits.

Instead, the process felt very rigid, as though it was based purely on a checklist rather than a broader evaluation of the applicant’s academic background and relevant subject knowledge. It is also worth noting that I am currently gaining practical experience within a school environment as a graduate assistant, assisting with teaching, supporting IB and AP academic programmes, and contributing to wider school activities. While this may not be a formal requirement for PGCE admission, it is frustrating to already be working within the education sector while struggling to access the qualification required to continue developing professionally.

STADIO is widely regarded as a reputable institution, which is one of the main reasons I was eager to apply. This review is therefore not intended as criticism of the institution as a whole, but rather to highlight that the early stages of the application and support process have been difficult to navigate. I would genuinely welcome the opportunity for someone from STADIO to review the application and provide clear guidance on whether there may still be a way forward whether through clarification of requirements, exploration of alternative entry pathways, or identification of any additional modules that may be required.

The goal is simply to find a constructive way to proceed and hopefully move forward with studying through the institution. I hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future applicants and that there may still be an opportunity to resolve this situation moving forward.
