Paid up bill

Had an outstanding balance of R113.54 it was paid in November 2014. I get a call 15 feb 2016 from a company called fourie and associates telling me i owe them R1120 or something. So to my knowledge i know i paid this account thinking its free and by no1 contacting me between the payment till now which is a year later i think this is ridiculous. Why did the retailer company take my payment if it was handed over to the lawyers now whose responsible for payment and sorting my credit score.
