Shocking service from Splashpool South Coast

I would like to submit my experience with a local pool company trading in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas known as Splashpool KZN (now trading as Splashpool Southcoast).

I had a SP12000 pool installed in December 2015 with a heater and spa. Three weeks after the installation, the paving around the pool started to collapse. After many delays and having my calls being avoided by the agent responsible for the installation of the pool, I managed to get hold of the then owner who came and took up the paving, filled the area around the pool with sand, and then repaved.

During winter when I tried using the heater to warm the pool it did not appear to be working, the blowers for the spa were tripping the lights, the pool light was no longer working and the paving was once again starting to crack, and the tiles starting to subside. By September the coping had collapsed completely.

I phoned the agent to notify him that when I tried to use the pool jets they had started tripping my house lights and that the pipes were leaking when I switched the jets on. Furthermore that the pool light had stopped working after only two months of use. After many excuses he advised me that he would come and sort the pool out during the week of 3 to 7 October.

By Thursday 6th October, having still had no response from him, I decided to contact an independent company to come and check the pool and advise me on what needed to be done to repair the pool. The company representative contacted the agent and advised him that he did not want to interfere with the agent's work so as not to void any warranties, and the agent again undertook to come and sort out the problems with the pool on either the 10th or 11th October.

By the end of October and I had still not heard from the agent as to when he planned to sort out these problems so I wrote to the Splashpool Head Office to enquire as to how the problem could be resolved. I then received the following response from the agent:

"After consultation with my head office, the following decision was made. As per the quote, the paving carries a 3 month warranty and has been repaired already once before. We cannot carry the cost for another repair. The light, as with any light purchased has no guarantee. The replacement cost is R680.00

The blower tripping the power in the house indicate that the unit somehow got wet and in this event the warranty from the manufacturer will not hold. The cost of a new blower is R1350.00. Any leaks in the pipe or fittings I will gladly replace with no cost to yourself."

During the December holidays I contacted some local pool companies to see what could be done to repair the pool. I was advised by the various service providers that came to look at the pool that, due to the bad workmanship, they did not want to try and sort out other people’s mistakes and I should revert back to the company that did the job. They advised the following:

The pool light had not blown but was more likely not working due to the wiring being too thin for underground cabling and that it has probably snapped off under the surface.

Since no cement block had been laid for the pump station, the heater and the blower for the jets were lying on the ground and getting moisture in them. The blower was getting water in it from the pool as no “pee trap” had been fitted and it had therefore blown.

The heater did not have proper insulation around the fittings and therefore the wires were touching each other and it, too, had blown.

The paving was collapsing and the pool, too, was subsiding as the ground has not been properly compacted.

The service I received from this company was totally disgraceful and I do not recommend them to anyone. Furthermore, I now sit with a pool that no one wants to repair.
