They said they had to return my parcel because they tried 3 times but couldn't get hold of anyone

They said they had to return my parcel because they tried 3 times but couldn't get hold of anyone. They can't send proof that they tried to call, or were there,and unless I pay another delivery fee, they won't deliver! There was someone there the whole day. They said they tried 3 times. Delivery date was the 2nd April. Did they try 3 times in 1 day?? Worst service ever! I think they do this to get more money!
