HIDDEN TRUTHS

I am a 25 year old student in health sciences at Wits. I went to spec-savers to get my first glasses done since they had a frame special in April. When I got there they took my ID and the optometrist invited me to her office for the tests. When the bill came out it was R3000, 3k! money I don't have, and this was excluding the frame special. The workers didn't even bother to mention the deals and they would keep quiet and let you pay extra. No one mentioned the price of the eye test and the cashier made a quote and stated that I needed to have things I don't need such as the light coating which cost R800 per lens saying the optometrist prescribed it, he didnt even bother showing me a quote without the coats. I went home rather sad because I didn't know how I was going to afford food that month. The student deal ends at 23 which I was aware of and one of the cashiers said that there's no point of thinking about it because I can't turn back the time, which was hurtful. I paid half and I am still trying to pay the rest through my tutoring job, but with my parents unemployed and without a bursary things are tough. I was a first time customer and I am saddened by the lack of transparency by spec-savers.
