SPAR - appalling customer at Spar 5 Ways in Port Elizabeth
Tonight, after I've just paid for the 2 items (Wilson's *** and Beacon Hazel Heaven Chocolate) I've purchased at Spar "5 Ways" in Port Elizabeth, situated at 62 Cape Road, I was approached by one of the security guards as I was exiting the store. The guard asked for my cash slip. After I asked him for the reason(s), he told me that he hasn't seen me pay. When I asked him if he had seen all other customers pay, he couldn't give me a satisfactory answer. This is what ****ed me off, because if you going to ask for my cash slip, then ask everyone else. I can’t be the exception! On what grounds? This actually angered me such that I felt as though I was accused of *****ing or something. When the guy who manages the store came close to us at the entrance, he actually signalled that we go outside as I'd by then started to raise my voice at this appalling experience. He actually even partly-closed the door at that very time he was signalled we go outside. By the time we were outside but still very close to the entrance, one of the Spar employees & the security company's Operations Director, one Charl/Carl Marx had now joined in the now full blown argument. The Spar employee, shouted on top of her voice and said "we ask for a slip when we suspect". SUSPECT???? This is the CRASSEST statement I've heard from a customer-facing employee. YOU DO NOT SUSPECT YOUR CUSTOMERS, EVEN IF YOU'RE SO EXCITED YOU COULD JUMP OUT OF YOUR OWN SKIN TO JUDGE THEM BY THEIR APPEARANCES! Charl/Carl Marx didn't do much to help the situation. Instead he said I mustn't shout, what should I have done? Be happy with such ****? I actually had to tell one of the guys not to push me as he was getting quite close to me but never actually physically pushed me. So my night of enjoying my book I was supposed to read has been totally ruined. I know everyone that was involved in this. I'm actually a regular customer at the 5 Ways Spar and pretty much know everyone there. I would understand if I had caused the store a bad experience in the past. So here I was being treated like a ***** even as I am a regular customer. People choose to shop where they can do so with dignity. Is it your policy to search customers when they leave your stores, both franchised and corporate? Can you publish this policy? I need to know this for me to make an informed decision next time as to where to shop. It'd have been better (if this is your policy), that I was informed I would be searched upon leaving the store. Then that is fair. But to be searched and other customers pass by because they're not "suspect"??????. Tell me what do you define as "suspect"???? Do you have different categories of “suspect” customers and “non-suspect” ones ??? GEEZ!!! This is disgusting!!!!! You’re competing with other retailers who do not do this nonsense. I actually even shop at Woolies and never ever was I asked for my cash slip nor have my bag searched upon entering their store.
