Please hire trained security personnel
I went into a Tops in PMB a few weeks and had a very uncomfortable experience , I did my shopping as per usual at Spar, went to load my groceries in the car then proceeded to the Tops at Spar to buy alcoholic beverages, as soon as I entered I received a stare down from the 3 security personnel that were at the door, I didn't pay much attention to this as I'm used to it, I look about 10 years younger than my actual age so I don't take offense to being asked to produce my ID or drivers license and well 'Right to admission reserved', however no one asked me for such. Naturally I walked around looking for specials, just browsing, occasionally I'd feel stares on me and an employee would walk past me and didn't even greet me or offer to help me look for something, I was just being harassed with stares. I eventually settled and bought a few items, proceeded to checkout, paid and left. I'm still being stared at but whatever, no one asks to check my slip or search me, I'm now at the exit, I'm well past the till points, if I'm being suspected of theft I should have been stopped right there and searched or questioned. Mind you I'm wearing a strappy bodycon dress (the ones that stick to the body), a light see-through Cardigan , strappy sandles and carrying a cross body saddle bag that just comfortably fits a phone and purse ,walking out with just the plastic bags with the goods I'd just purchased. I proceeded to the ATMs across the store to withdraw cash, then to the parking lot to my car, opened my boot which already had shopping bags from my grocery shop earlier, load my 2 shopping bags from Tops and just as I lift up my head, I see a shadow circling around me, its one of the guards from Tops looking into my car, I turn and ask if I can help him, I move to side so he can get a clear view of my boot because he clearly needs to see something, he then gives a response of "Lutho" meaning nothing in English over a two way device to whomever he was communicating with and proceeded to walk away, to wards the entrance of Spar they were security gaurds and about 3 customers looking in my direction, towards Tops entrance a security guard and lady who had helped me at the till were out the store standing with a customer who was served after me. No apology, no response to me, nothing! It was only after I asked the guard who was now walking away from me to explain what was happening that he responded with "Hayi sisi khululeka, hamba" (No sister relax you can go)
I'm not writing this to shame anyone directly hence I'm not not mentioning which store, however as consumers we know our rights, we know which approach we should expect even when we are in the wrong. The manner in which I was treated was appalling, disrespectful and embarrassing. Someone left that parking lot thinking "that girl tried to ***** or stole". Its not a nice experience.
I feel Spar should really try to ensure that the security companies they hire follow all protocol, regulations and codes of conduct, refresh your teams on a daily basis on how to handle theft and suspected theft, as a small business owner I know all about shoplifting and such but law is law. One shouldn't be made to feel like that. If you fear a customer might conceal an item in her bag or on her body, you offer a basket that way they now know that someone is watching them and has noted their suspicious behaviour. You don't move around them like a hawk, at least offer to assist them with their shopping, you get to watch what they are doing whilst doing your job. Following someone to their car when you had the opportunity to stop them at the door and ATM directly across embarrassing them in the process is not on guys. Do better next time, just because you don't ********ly search someone does not mean they then need to be treated unfairly. If I'd been approached correctly I'd have cooperated fully and matter wouldve been resolved but to be treated as though I'm some low life straatmeisie over nothing was not a nice feeling.
