Paying for straws now

I went to my local Spar in Somerset West today to do some shopping. One of the items I bought was a 5 cooldrinks for me and the family. Forgot to take straws on my way out. Went back and was told I must pay R3.00 for the straws. Since when must we pay for straws and why so much? It upset me so much that I will rather go down the road to Checkers from now on.
