Blend seed and extra virgin olive oil passed off as extra virgin olive oil.
I went to SUPER SPAR Hout Bay to buy the extra virgin olive oil that they advertised for sale in a sales pamphlet inserted into the local newspaper. The description clearly read " Olive Pride Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 litre R 64,99 each. The promotional label on the shelf said the same. On closer inspection of the bottle, this was labelled "A blend of seed oils and extra virgin olive oil. I went to management and said that I wanted the product advertised in the newspaper and on the shelf. The reply was that the bottle stacked behind the product was on special. I asked how a blend of seed and extra virgin olive oil is "extra virgin olive oil". Their response was that it is the same thing. My arguments fell on deaf ears, both the store manager and the buyer remained adamant that this was the same product. IT IS NOT the same. The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 under CHAPTER 2 protects the FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS of the consumer: "Part D Right to disclosure and information: Product labelling and trade descriptions: 24. (1) For the purposes of this section, a trade description is app**** to goods if it is— ....... (b) displayed together with, or in proximity to, the goods in a manner that is likely to lead to the belief that the goods are designated or described by that description; or (c) is contained in any sign, adverti*****t, catalogue, brochure, circular, wine list, invoice, business letter, business paper or other commercial communication on the basis of which a consumer may request or order the goods."
The manager and the buyer then had the audacity to say that I was the only client who had complained about this. I have been a loyal client for over 15 years, not anymore!
