Bad experience as a male customer
On 27 January 2022 at around 17h47, I went into the Tops in Zevenwacht Mall. As I walked in I was called back by a staff member, named Siboniwe as per the name tag, standing at the door. I turned back thinking he wanted me to sanitize, as I had mistakenly not done so. When I approached him he said: ‘You need to leave your bag here’ (at the entrance of the store, on top of some beer display). I pointed out to him that a woman in the store has her backpack on, and why should I have to leave my backpack at the door? To which he responds: ‘You are a man, we know why men want to enter the shops with their bags’. I responded saying: ‘That is a nonsense rule’ and left my bag at the door, and he rep**** saying: ‘it is not a nonsense rule’. What bothered me about this interaction is, it seems that (at least) at this particular store, male customers are profiled. To the extent that they have (at least) one rule that applies only to male customers which requires us to leave our backpacks at the door because according to Siboniwe: ‘we know why men want to enter the shops with their bags’. Additionally, I have never had to leave my backpack at the entrance of this Tops, or any other Tops for that matter. Will not be going to Tops or Spar at Zevenwacht mall if this the attitude they have towards their male customers.
(P.S. this is not a review about Zevenwacht Mall, but the rather the Tops at the mall Which could not be selected as a business on this platform)
