HelloPeter Complaint – Moldy Cupcakes and Extremely Poor Service I am extremely angry , disappointed and embarrassed with the service I received from VC Super Spar Dalview,1 Craigholm str, Dalview, regarding a very serious food-safety issue. On 19 August 2026 at approximately 17:30, I purchased cupcakes from SPAR VC Brakpan for my daughter to take to school for her birthday. The packaging clearly stated “Packed: 19/08/2026” and “Sell by: 22/08/2026.” The following day, when the cupcakes were distributed at school, the teacher and learners discovered that the cupcakes were moldy. I was immediately informed by the teacher. I instructed her to throw away the cupcakes that had already been opened and to keep the remaining unopened trays for me so that I could return them to SPAR. I went back to the store with the remaining two trays of cupcakes( Originally bought 5 trays) and explained the situation to the Supervisor. What made me even more angry and disappointed was the response I received. I was given only R100, because I was told that SPAR could not refund the cupcakes that they could not physically see. How was I supposed to retrieve cupcakes that had already been opened and thrown into a school bin? I certainly was not going to ask the teacher to retrieve moldy food from a bin, as that would be completely unsanitary and unacceptable. The lady at the front desk, with curly hair, also refused to provide me with a full refund. There was no proper understanding, empathy or concern shown regarding the fact that moldy food had been sold to a customer and could potentially have caused illness to children. This is not simply about a refund. This is a serious food-safety issue. Moldy food should never be taken lightly, especially when the product was still within its stated sell-by date. The fact that these cupcakes were purchased on 19 August, with a sell-by date of 22 August, makes this even more concerning. I am a regular customer at this SPAR, which makes the way this matter was handled even more disappointing. After this experience, I no longer feel comfortable purchasing food from this store and will seriously reconsider ever shopping there again. I expect SPAR to take this complaint seriously, investigate how these cupcakes were stored and sold, and address the unacceptable manner in which my complaint was handled. Moldy food is a health risk. This should NEVER be treated as simply a refund dispute. I am extremely disappointed, angry and dissatisfied with SPAR VC Brakpan and the way this matter was handled. I expect a proper response and accountability for what happened.
