SPAR Use of dangerous chemicals in food prep and serving area - Bottelary - Stay away.
Yesterday during a visit to the SPAR store in Bottelary, Haasendal Stellenbosch, a staff member poured a white powder substance (Biocide - not sure of the brand) into a bucket of steaming water. Right next to the cooked food. This caused a chemical reaction which made everyone, including staff and patrons, cough and leave the area. I was informed by both the store manager, Riaan, and the F&B manager that the staff member had not received proper training and was NOT supposed to open the packet right in next to food and customers. The owner of store called me today, not once did he ask about my well being or how I am feeling. I went into the store, healthy and happy. I now have a raw tongue, burnt throat and lungs due to the exposure. The owner then had the audacity to ask me "what is it that you want out of this?" and " I dont know where you get your information from". From your staff, sir! I wanted to have an amicable conversation. And my medical bills to be covered. He was rude, short and brash. And very defensive.

I then reported the matter to SPAR head office. I asked for an apology from the owner in writing and that he must prove which steps are being put place to protect the staff, and the customers.
SPAR head office now wants time to investigate. And I must go back to the store if I want to submit a claim. (that's a great idea)
The manager admitted that a mistake was made. The F&B manager admitted that a mistake was made. The owner says "They are lying and should not have said that."
I just asked for an apology in writing and confirmation that my bills will be covered. Apparently "a proper apology take a few days to put together".....

- Make sure that food and beverages are effectively shielded from the product.
- Never pour a biocidal product into another container. This increases the risk of accidental poisoning.
- Strictly follow the indicated quantities. Using too much of a product does not lead to a better result - in fact, it’s quite the contrary!
- After use, store the biocidal product in a safe place, out of reach of children.
