Sony will not repair faulty screen under warranty

Sony South Africa will not honour the 1 year warranty on Sony Xperia Z3 with screen problems. The phone screen went black and I was informed by Sony to take the phone to their repair centre in Boksburg (SSS Cellular). Where I was told I would firstly be charged a fee to even have the phone looked at and then told that it would not be covered under the warranty period even though the phone is less than a year old.
