Passing bad phone design off as client error.

My Sony Xperia Z1 compact died of water contact - when I submerged it with all ports closed.

I sent it in for repair for 'water damage' at a Sony center, where after I got told that the phone is 'beyond economical repair' and it is my own problem. The report I received by phone also said that there was visible water damage on the indicators behind the seals.

The Z1 compact is sold as a premium waterproof phone, that should survive submersion for half an hour at 1.5m with all ports closed. My phone, and I have an eye witness there to confirm it, with ALL PORTS CLOSED - was submerged for around a minute, to take a couple of photos. Never more than 70cm deep. The phone did not make it, not even for the first photo.

The phone is 6 months old, and in pristine condition otherwise.

Sony is blaming user fault when the product failed due to bad design - the quality of the port seals and the quality of the seal it produces, and misleading/false advertising - pictures showing the phone dripping wet and posters encouraging users to use it at the pool, claiming half an hour at 1.5m submersion.

They returned my phone physically damaged - broken speaker and back cover.

No accountability.
