smd holding info from customers

I recently bought a car at smd which i am happy with. One thing that bothers me though when i fetched the car in East london branch they told me they would take the car battery out as they not allowd to release a car with a battery. My question is why they have not informed me about this before, is it even legal to do that. I feel like i was ********** . Please explain this to me
