Smart Furniture - Mashatlltown

Last week Friday, 14 Jan 2022, we received our dining room set (table and 8 chairs) including a L-shapes couch from Smart Furniture purchased through lay-by last year December (2021). While the dining room table had a chip on it, it did not bother us that much. However, the L-shaped couch which was sold on special at R35 000 (white in colour) was not what we expected. We were told by the service agent at the Joburg store that all furniture that is bought is manufactured with 10 to 14 days. The expectation being that this will be brand new furniture. However, the couch upon unwrapping seemingly looked like a used couch. It looked nothing like the one we saw on the advert or the one we saw in store, albeit brown in colour.

The biggest problem we have now is that we have not received feedback from the senior representative from Smart Furniture since this past weekend regarding this matter. I sent two WhatsApp messages informing the service agent and a subsequent senior staff member that we are extremely dissatisfied with the couch and that we would either like to change the couch to a new colour or have them make available the same couch in leather and have us pay whatever we would owe for the total cost of the leather couch. Because we are from Potchefstroom in Mohadin, we paid R2000 for the delivery of the couch and the dining room table and chairs.

Both WhatsApp messages have not been responded to. As a husband, this creates a problem for me in my home because my wife expects me to resolve this problem. But this is obviously made difficult by the fact that my phone calls aren't being answered and messages not responded to.

I had read similar complaints about Smart Furniture on this platform and communicated my fears to my wife. But, as one may very well know, we decided to give the business the benefit of the doubt and went ahead with paying R53 000.00 for the couch and dining room set.

I am sure to speak to a lawyer about this matter and take the business head on. We cannot have such happening with our hard earned money excited about prospects of building a good home for our children.
