Atrocious, unprofessional guest communication from Martenique Scott of Slaap Self Catering

I am at a lack of word to start explaining my experience with Martenique Scott whom is the owner of Slaap Self Catering in Paarl. We reserved accommodation at your apartment in Paarl a month in advance through Booking.com. On the day of arrival, we contacted her as to confirm how to get access to the apartment as the instructions and directions was not clear. At which point she was not aware of our reservation and under the assumption that our reservation was cancelled, with the explanation that her property manager was supposed to cancel the reservation on the 1st of Jan 2026. Not to mention that we have not received a call, message or email from the said agent to advise of any cancellations. We did however receive a confirmation email and message via the Booking.com website on the 02nd Jan 2026 to confirm our stay and with a list of things we needed to know in preparation for the stay at the property. She then said she will make arrangements for a key to be delivered to us. She contacted the gentleman whom is in charge of cleaning her property to assist. Taking in consideration that he was not prepared for this and was 20min away, which delayed check-in with a further 20min. He made contact with me to advise that the beds still need to be made if we can give them a couple of minutes to sort out upon arrival at the property. I exclaimed my dissatisfaction to Martenique and asked how this could even be possible and she just said her property manager was suppose to cancel the reservation and that I should make contact with them..? I then proceed and ask why the booking got cancelled last minute she just said they had bedbugs....!!! (Excuse me?! What normal level minded human being would not communicate this to their booking company aka Booking.com and take hospitality action in getting the right company out to treat this at which point she would have been in a position to at least show proof that the problem has been taken care of with a certificate). The absolute atrocious, unprofessional and rude communication that followed after we requested a refund from Martenique, as no-one can expect a guest to stay at a property that have bedbugs, was mind numbing and shocked me. I've worked in the hospitality industry before and have never even imagined to ever speak to a guest in the way she did. She was not forthcoming, willing to at least try and assist or help us with getting the refund processed. Not to even mention that she had the audacity to say that she first have to do her investigation and accuse us of without her knowledge staying at her apartment and requesting a refund. In what state of mind do you have to be not to only miss communicate, miss treat and rudely accuse fully paid guests that's going through a bad experience due to your mishap. I will not stop until I have my money paid in full... We're very lucky to be in an era where social media can either make or break you.
