On the 2nd of August this year, my friend and I visited Sky Villa for lunch before attending a gala at the Grand Hotel later that evening. I had chosen Sky Villa because I have supported this establishment for over five years, and I always associated it with good service and a welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, this visit turned out to be the worst experience I’ve ever had there. Upon arrival, we were approached by a woman (seemingly a manager or supervisor) whose tone and demeanor were dismissive, rude, and unwelcoming. Instead of a greeting, we were immediately interrogated with, “Did you book? Are you here for pictures or for lunch?” The way she spoke suggested she had already profiled us as though because we are Black we could not possibly be serious customers there to dine. I explained that I had been a regular guest at Sky Villa for years and had never once needed to make a reservation to enjoy a simple lunch. Security had let us in knowing we were headed to the restaurant, yet this woman treated us as if we were intruding. Even after I pointed out the table we wanted, she looked me directly in the eye and asked, “Are you sure you’re going to stay?” a question that made it clear she doubted our intention or ability to sit down and order. Her repeated interruptions and her tone left us feeling disrespected, unwelcome, and blatantly racially profiled. What should have been a pleasant afternoon turned into a humiliating experience. Eventually, I paid for the drink I had ordered and left, as it was obvious she was intent on chasing us away. I have always believed Sky Villa to be one of Plettenberg Bay’s finest establishments, but this experience was deeply disappointing. It was not only unprofessional but also carried undertones of ************** and prejudice. I left feeling triggered and hurt, and to this day I struggle to think of returning. Sky Villa needs to take a serious look at the way guests are treated, especially locals who have supported them over many years. Hospitality should never feel exclusionary or demeaning
