Sizwe Hosmed initially refused to authorise a medically necessary knee replacement surgery until legal intervention became necessary. Even after the procedure was eventually approved, hospitals were still unwilling to admit the patient because of serious concerns about whether they would actually get paid by the scheme.

As a result, we were forced to pay massive medical expenses ourselves in order for the surgery to proceed. The operation was successfully completed, all claims were properly submitted, and yet months later Sizwe Hosmed still refuses to pay the approved claims.

Members are left financially devastated while emails and calls go unanswered. A medical scheme should provide peace of mind during a medical crisis — not create one.
