SHOPRITE BLUE DOWNS "Declined wiCode at Checkout, Left Stranded"
This situation is extremely frustrating. I generated a wiCode and, to be absolutely sure, I even asked one of the managers on duty whether I could use some of the funds from the wiCode at Shoprite and one of their other stores. I was assured that this would work. However, just as my gut suspected, when I went to a different branch (because the first one didn’t have all the ingredients I needed), I was told that the code purchase was declined. That left me standing at the pay point with my goods but no way to pay.
Today, I called the call centre and was informed that any funds not used within a day are forfeited. Really? No empathy, no attempt to even ask for my Xtra Savings information or contact number to better understand my query. I am very, very disappointed.
For clarity, here is what Shoprite’s own information says about wiCodes and Money Market vouchers:
Remaining Balance: If you do not use all the funds from a Shoprite Money Market voucher (which uses a wiCode) in a single transaction, the leftover balance is supposed to be loaded onto a physical Shoprite gift card in-store for future use.
No Cash Change: The funds cannot be exchanged for cash, and you will not receive cash back for the difference.
Usage: The virtual voucher is generally intended for a single transaction, with any balance managed via the gift card system.
Validity: Shoprite vouchers are typically valid for three years from the date of purchase, giving customers plenty of time to use the remaining funds on the gift card.
Yet, the website also states the following:
Money Transfers: If the wiCode was issued as part of a money transfer (rather than a grocery voucher), the funds may appear in the recipient’s “cash wallet” within the Shoprite Money Market Account once registered. These funds can then be used for future withdrawals or purchases. Importantly, the money in the cash wallet does not expire, although it is advised to collect it as soon as possible.
So why does in-store staff insist on one version of the policy, while the website presents another? This inconsistency is confusing and leaves customers like me stranded and disappointed. ***
