Do we pack our own groceries now into bags

Was at shoprite 394 smith str,off west str Durban this morning to get a few things when I got to the express till there was 2 cashiers one guy and two ladies at ather end so I got to this guy cashier he scanned my things and he asked if I needed a packet n I said yes he jst scanned it n left it aside for me to pack my things while he carried on with whatever he was doing now my question is since when do we customers pack our own groceries now , I was very disappointed I jst packed my things and left
