Disappointing and Unsafe: My Experience with Spoiled Food at Shoprite
I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with a recent purchase at Shoprite and the subsequent handling of my complaint. My experience highlights a serious health and safety issue that seems to be a recurring problem at your store. I recently purchased a piece of pumpkin that was completely moldy. When I returned to the store, I was shocked by the regional manager's response. He told me that this is a common issue because "we live in South Africa where load shedding happens." While I understand the challenges posed by power cuts, this is not a valid excuse for selling spoiled food. It is the store's responsibility to ensure that all perishable items are stored correctly, regardless of load shedding. This is not the first time I've encountered this issue. On a separate occasion, I had to return meat that smelled of death. The frequent sale of rotten food poses a significant health risk to consumers. After demanding to be compensated for the inconvenience, I was offered a R50 store voucher. This is an insulting gesture that fails to adequately address the gravity of the situation. A R50 voucher does not compensate for the time and effort I spent returning a spoiled product, nor does it address the serious health concerns raised by the repeated sale of unsafe food. I urge Shoprite to take these matters seriously and implement robust procedures to prevent this from happening again. Customers deserve to feel confident that the food they buy is safe to eat.
